If you are wondering what the current consensus on is as to ‘Why Give’ I have stumbled across a couple of sources. They mostly talk about giving to be altruistic – a selfless act, to give one a sincere sense of purpose or to raise your charitable status among others. Ultimately, we as a human race must give to survive.

From the Fed Bank of St Louis Study,

Although some people may be altruistic when giving, economics tells us that the dominant motivation is the internal satisfaction that individuals derive from the act of giving itself. Individuals derive utility from giving much in the same way they obtain satisfaction from buying a new car or eating at a restaurant; especially when the number of donors is large, the social context of other people’s giving is overshadowed by the satisfaction of one’s own giving when considering how much to give.

From Sean’s Blog on Philantrophy,

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines altruism as, “unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others” If a person sacrifices themselves for another, it is not simple “unselfish”, it is because they would be completely miserable if they chose to look the other way. Any parent knows that the happiness and health of their children is more important than their own needs. This isn’t “unselfish”, it is just a fact of life.

The narrative of philanthropy is dominated by the concept that people who give do so to get something for themselves. I cannot tell you how many references I’ve seen to people saying that Warren Buffett’s gift to the Gates Foundation was a way for him to exploit a loophole to avoid taxes. But I think that narrative is false. Humans are interconnected with each other whether they like it of not. The fact that helping others also helps us does not diminish the act of giving, it is the brilliant fact of life that makes community work.

An excerpt from this world-changing philanthropist, written in a very frank, inspiring manner.

Bill Gates

I love the work at the foundation. Although there are many differences [from Microsoft], it also has the three magical elements.

First there are opportunities for big breakthroughs—from discovering new vaccines that can save millions of lives to developing new seeds that will let a farming family have better productivity, improve their children’s nutrition, and sell some of the extra output.

Second, I feel like my experience in building teams of smart people with different skill sets focused on tough long-term problems can be a real contribution. The common sense of the business world, with its urgency and focus, has strong application in the philanthropic world. I am sure I will make mistakes in over-applying some elements from my previous experience and will need to adjust. For instance, the countries where Microsoft does business are far more stable and have a lot more infrastructure than most of the places where the foundation does its work, so I’ll need to better appreciate how difficult it will be to execute our strategies. However, I am equally confident that our maniacal focus on drawing in the best talent and measuring results will make a difference.

Finally, I find the intelligence and dedication of the people involved in these issues to be just as impressive as what I have seen before. Whether they are scientists at a university or people who have worked in the field in Africa most of their lives, they have critical knowledge and want to help make the breakthroughs. The opportunity to gather smart, creative people into teams and give them resources and guidance as they tackle the challenges is very fulfilling.

Happy givings.

The global economic boom is well and truly over with the big players of the first world entering recession. It is now 2009 and times are tough. The question is, ‘Will you stop giving?’

source

Let it be known, I have never really enjoyed the Microsoft software monopoly or Bill Gates cut throat copy and buy out business tactics. But now it seems Bill is on a new path. He is on a journey of ‘giving back’ and I respect that immensely.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was set up in 2000 with the large goals of improving health care, education and poverty-relief. In 2006 Warren Buffett pledged to gradually give the foundation $US 30.7 Billion.

From this the powerful Gates couple have been working towards remedying issues with the following issues:

Global Health

Here is an article from the Gates Foundation website speaking of the journey the two philanthropists made and their conclusions. Enjoy and keep giving!

More than a decade ago, the two of us read an article about the millions of children who were dying every year in poor countries from diseases that were long ago eliminated in this country. One disease we had never even heard of—rotavirus—was killing literally half a million kids each year. We thought: That’s got to be a typo. If a single disease were killing that many kids, we would have heard about it, because it would have been front-page news. But it wasn’t a typo.

We couldn’t escape the brutal conclusion that—in our world today—some lives are seen as worth saving and others are not. We said to ourselves: “This can’t be true. But if it is true, it deserves to be the priority of our giving.”

We sent the article to Bill’s father, Bill Gates Sr., with a note attached that said, “Dad, maybe we can do something about this.” And he helped us get started.

We created the Gates Foundation in 2000 because we believe in the principle that every human life has equal worth. The life of an impoverished child in a developing country is as precious as the life of a middle-class kid in a developed one. A family struggling to make ends meet in an American inner city matters as much as a family thriving in a safe, suburban neighborhood. Today, billions of people never even have the chance to live a healthy, productive life. We want to help all people get that opportunity.

We know it can be done because this is a unique moment in history: Scientific and technological advances are making it possible to solve big, complicated problems like never before. If these advances are focused on the problems of the people with the most urgent needs and the fewest champions, then within this century billions of people will grow up healthier, get a better education, and gain the power to lift themselves out of poverty. Warren Buffett shares our sense of optimism, and we are deeply humbled by his decision to give a significant portion of his resources to the foundation.

We’re so hopeful about the potential for rapid progress that we’ve decided the foundation will spend all its money in the next 100 years. In this century, our world has the opportunity to fulfill the great human promise that all lives have equal value.
